Itâ€™s very easy to become overwhelmed with it all, give up, and turn to a bowl of popcorn and some candy and call it a day. Unfortunately, weâ€™re running out of time. Quickly. So with that in mind, itâ€™s time to take action and achieve those results weâ€™ve all been patiently waiting on the couch for the abs fairies to deliver. According to a recent article on NBC news by Bayer Consumer Health, there are four steps that we can all take. 1. â€œGet Your Nutrientsâ€ According to Bayer, hunger can be cured by something as simple as a spoonful of peanut butter. Itâ€™s very easy to turn to processed foods for a quick snack, but as a general rule, if there are more than a few ingredients in the food youâ€™re eating (i.e. thereâ€™s a list of ingredients, half of which you canâ€™t pronounce) donâ€™t eat it. Junk food is not good for you, so try to avoid it as much as possible. In general, stick to the 80-20 rule: have 80 percent of your diet be made of healthy calories and 20 percent can be for those cravings/unhealthy items. Also, if utilizing vitamins, be sure to use them in addition to your healthy eating, not as the sole source of vitamins. In other words, a healthy diet is key to your workout plan, whether you want it to be or not, so the more healthy food youâ€™re putting into your body, the better. To avoid temptation, remove all junk food from your house. Laziness typically wins out and if the food isnâ€™t directly in front of you, you arenâ€™t likely going to seek it out when youâ€™re surrounded by healthy alternatives. 2. â€œWork Harder for Less Timeâ€ Circuit training, or â€œshort, high-effort bursts followed by short periods of active recovery,â€ is the best way to achieve results. So donâ€™t plan out a full, hour-long workout where youâ€™re running or using one machine, but instead, incorporate several different components for about a minute each. While in total, you arenâ€™t going to be spending nearly as much time working out (itâ€™ll probably cut your workout in half), itâ€™s going to be more effective in the long run. This is really good news for all of us, as the less time we can spend in the gym, the better. So get those workouts in, shower, and enjoy some Netflix. Win-Win. 3. â€œCount Up, Not Downâ€ Many individuals set a number for themselves. For instance, some workout routines start you out at 10 pushups, 10 sit ups and 10 squats. However, this isnâ€™t a true baseline measure. Instead, time yourself for one minute and see how many of each you can do. Record that number. For the final minute, do a plank. Use as many moves as you want and set up a daily routine to do in the morning, at night, or during your lunch break. You can try to improve your numbers every day, truly giving yourself room for progress. As another tip, donâ€™t count up when doing any reps but count down instead. Countdowns are more likely to motivate you in your workout. 4. â€œTrain Legs to Get Absâ€ Show of hands, how many of you skip leg day? You arenâ€™t alone. Leg day is skipped by many individuals, simply because itâ€™s too hard or because we donâ€™t seem to care so much about our legs and instead want results in more noticeable places, like our arms and abs. However, leg training is perhaps the most important. Leg workouts tend to burn the most calories, as youâ€™re working the largest muscle group in your body, and many leg workouts also happen to target your abs. Two birds, one stone. All four of these tips are great to keep in mind when putting together your daily workout routine and when hitting the kitchen for some meal prep or quick snacks. Going out of your way to provide ongoing support and advice is one way the best instructors set themselves apart from the rest. Sometimes, its as simple as being a familiar face at an audition. Read on for NY voice teacher Deanna C.s story One of the most challenging aspects of music education is to get students to throw away performance nerves. For students in my area, this form of anxiety tends to be heightened each year when NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) season rolls around. As a music educator, it is your goal to help students overcome this fear by any means necessary. Success is met when your studentâ€™s needs become your first priority. One NYSSMA season, I had a student with severe performance anxiety. The day of her audition she called me in complete panic mode. In an attempt to calm her nerves, I cleared my schedule and had her come to my studio. We did warm-ups and then ran several mock auditions so that she knew exactly what to expect. While this seemed to alleviate some of the fear, she was still shaken up and asked if I would accompany her to the audition. Of course I said yes, knowing how helpful familiar faces can be during emotional times. After we were signed in, there was nothing left to do but wait until the judge was ready. She began to pace as her anxiety kicked into overdrive. I took her aside, hoping to distract her mind from the nerves. We went over last minute Italian pronunciations and the steps to make sight singing easier. The girl in the time spot ahead of my student was leaving the room, meaning we only had a few minutes left. Now it was time for a pep talk. I told her that I was proud of all the hard work and passion that she had put into her lessons. We had over-prepared for this audition so I knew that she would do extremely well. The judge was at the door calling her name, with a bright smile on her face. â€œSee, she looks friendly! You can do this!â€ I whispered and gave her the thumbs up. She took a deep breath and then calmly walked into the audition room. After several weeks had passed, we received the audition results. Not only did my student receive the highest mark in her entire school, but she had also gotten a perfect score. I was so proud of her that I went out and purchased little treble clef earrings as a congratulatory present. I learned from this experience that when you put the students first, you will always have a positive outcome. As a teacher, I strive to be 110% aware of my students needs so that I can help them flourish as musicians. Fuji is a popular destination and over 300,000 people head there every year between July and September. It can be quite costly getting to Japan and Mount Fuji. July is busy in Japan so make sure you get your flights as early as possible.To get the best rates, you probably want to be flexible on dates and get flights that work according to your budget.Once you get to Tokyo, you can get to Mount Fuji quite easily and start walking the volcanic trails. There are two ways to get there:By bus: about 2 and a half hours at £40.By train: about 2 hours at £60.You can also get to Mount Fuji from Kyoto and Osaka. You can get to Mount Fuji from most major cities. If youâ€™ve got a Japan Rail Pass, youâ€™ll probably want to go by train. Otherwise, the bus will be the best option financially.Once you get there, youâ€™ll need somewhere to stay. Accommodation starts at around £40 a night but prices can easily get up to £130 a night. Initiatives To Increase College Graduation Rates Until recently, America has led the world in producing college graduates. President Barack Obama has vowed that America will retake the lead by 2020, winning the support and funding of many organizations. Higher-education groups have targeted many different groups and demographics, always trying to promote education to increase Americas overall number of college graduates. These groups have promoted the importance of this initiative to community colleges, public universities, African American students, college dropouts and other demographics. Now, education groups and the Obama administration are targeting Hispanic students to increase Americas overall number of college graduates, hoping to reach its 2020 goal, according to an article in the Washington Post. This concept was presented by non-profit organization Excelencia in Education, along with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lumina Foundation and other major education advocacy groups. This initiative, called Roadmap for Ensuring Americas Future, suggests that Hispanics will have to earn 5.5 million college degrees by 2020 for America to reach its goal of having 51 percent of the population being college or postsecondary degree graduates. The 51% college graduation rate is fairly low, compared to other organizations goals of 55-60%. Hispanics are now being targeted because they are the fastest growing minority group in America. The Hispanic population is projected to triple in size by 2050 and represent 29% of the U.S. population, all according to Pew Research. Hispanics are also now being targeted because of their historically-low college-completion rates. Other cultural factors such as not wanting to incur college-loan debt also contribute to low-graduation rates. State and institutional initiatives that focus on those (Hispanic) students can make a big difference, the Excelencia in Education group said in a release. Research from the Excelencia in Education group indicates that Hispanic students often enroll in college later on in life and at community colleges closer to their homes. This is great news for Hispanic students as many organizations will take a personal interest in increasing the number of Hispanic college students and graduates. Organizations are likely to create scholarships and other resources for prospective Hispanic college students. Other than targeting specific groups and demographics, education organizations are also trying to create programs to better retain current, working college students, increase college-preparatory and dual-enrollment programs and simplify two- to four-year transfers and guarantee need-based aid to deserving students.
